ZRM Also Boasts New Enterprise Backup Features to Increase MySQL DBA Productivity
Zmanda™, the leader in open source backup and recovery software, today announced that Zmanda Recovery Manager (ZRM) for MySQL — the only comprehensive, enterprise-class backup and recovery solution designed specifically for MySQL databases — is available on Ubuntu. ZRM for MySQL now supports all major Linux distributions. The latest release of ZRM for MySQL also includes new and enhanced functionality to increase MySQL DBA operational productivity and control.
An open source solution, ZRM for MySQL is enterprise-class backup and recovery software designed to help MySQL DBAs prevent the serious damage caused by data loss in the event of system or database failure. ZRM is different from traditional backup solutions that provide an agent for MySQL and essentially force-fit a MySQL environment into a system-wide backup process. ZRM is designed specifically for MySQL databases and includes features for the unique requirements of the MySQL DBA, such as MySQL storage engine awareness and granular point-in-time recovery.
“The latest release of ZRM for MySQL includes important enhancements that we added based, in large part, on feedback from the MySQL DBA community,” said Chander Kant, Zmanda CEO. “Support for Ubuntu, the fastest-growing Linux distribution, will expand the market for ZRM, and the new enterprise features, such as better support for remote servers, will significantly improve overall MySQL DBA productivity.”
“As Linux, MySQL and other open source software become more widely used for large enterprise implementations, the job of the database administrator is becoming more complex,” said Malcolm Yates, ISV and Partner Manager at Canonical. “Combining the flexibility of ZRM for MySQL and the ease-of-use of Ubuntu means that managing MySQL databases can now be much easier. We are also very happy that Zmanda makes major contributions to open source through their community editions.”
The latest release of ZRM for MySQL includes enhancements designed to improve support for remote MySQL servers, fine-tune ZRM for optimal backup, and deliver more flexible reporting. New features include:
- Support for incremental backup for remote MySQL servers to reduce the load on MySQL server and network during backup.
- Ability to backup a database across a firewall
- Support for encryption and compression of backup images
- New pluggable architecture
- A scheduling plug-in that lets DBAs postpone backups based on DBA-defined thresholds
- Pre- and post-backup plug-ins that allow a DBA to perform certain actions on MySQL before or after backup
- New, more flexible formatting for backup reports. For example, backup reports can be automatically received via RSS feed making it easier to consolidate reports for a dashboard or any monitoring application

Joel Parker Henderson, an enterprise application consultant specializing in business-to-business extranets, is working with a customer to develop a nationwide in-store digital advertising system with mission-critical data stored in MySQL and protected 24/7 by ZRM for MySQL.
“I chose ZRM because, in my opinion, it’s a must-have for the fastest recovery in case of an accident or system failure on MySQL databases. I evaluated the top-tier hosting companies and their respective backup solutions and I found that only ZRM provides the level of service and reliability my customer needs.”
ZRM for MySQL is open source software, available in an Enterprise version and a Community version. The Enterprise version is available as part of a paid subscription to the Zmanda Network that includes certified and pre-compiled software, technical support, knowledgebase access, software updates and security alerts. The Community version is available at no cost and can be downloaded at http://www.zmanda.com/downloads.html.
