As the automotive industry continues to accelerate towards a more connected, autonomous, and electric future, Canonical is thrilled to participate in the IAA Transportation 2024 in Hanover. This important event is a great opportunity for us to demonstrate our latest achievements in automotive software, focusing on an open source EV charging station demo, and a cutting-edge Over-the-Air (OTA) solution powered by the Snap Store.
Driving the future with Anbox Cloud
One of the highlights at our booth this year will be the automotive features in Anbox Cloud, an advanced solution that streamlines the development of automotive infotainment systems. With the increasing complexity of in-car infotainment, there is a growing need for flexible, cloud-native solutions. The new Anbox Cloud release addresses this need by allowing developers to deploy and test Android™ Automotive OS (AAOS) images directly in the cloud, eliminating hardware dependencies and accelerating the development process.
Visitors at our booth will experience first-hand how Anbox Cloud supports the deployment of reference AAOS images and OEM-specific Android images. This capability is crucial for validating applications in a consistent environment that closely resembles the target hardware, ensuring higher quality and reliability in the final product. On top of that, Anbox Cloud’s other features, like Vehicle Hardware Abstraction Layer (VHAL) property control, allow developers to simulate various vehicle settings, improving the robustness and functionality of in-car applications.
We are also thrilled to announce that we will be presenting these innovations on stage at IAA Transportation 2024. Make sure to join us on Tuesday, September 17th at 4pm for a special session at the speaker’s corner, Hall 13. We will be joined on stage by:
- Matthieu Sarrazin, Global Head of Automotive at Canonical
- Bertrand Boisseau, Automotive Sector Lead and Product manager at Canonical
- Moritz Neukirchner, Sr. Director at Elektrobit Automotive GmbH
to explore how Anbox Cloud is helping with Android Automotive development challenges.

Powering the future with Open Source EV charging
As the global automotive market transitions to electric vehicles (EVs), the demand for efficient and scalable EV charging infrastructure has never been greater. Canonical is proud to present our collaboration with DFI and PIONIX to build an open source charging station software stack, which will be featured at IAA 2024. This demonstration will showcase EVerest, an open source software framework that enables seamless communication between EV chargers, vehicles, and the grid, ensuring optimal performance and compliance with international standards like ISO 15118 and OCPP.
By packaging EVerest as a snap, Canonical ensures that this solution can be quickly and securely deployed at scale. This approach not only simplifies the deployment process but also guarantees that the charging stations are always up-to-date with the latest security patches and features, providing a robust and future-proof solution for EV charging stations.
Extending Over-the-Air updates
Canonical’s commitment to contributing to the automotive industry’s software shift extends to vehicle maintenance and software management through our OTA update solution powered by the Snap Store. At IAA 2024, we will demonstrate how a dedicated Snap Store enables seamless updates of a vehicle’s electronic control units (ECUs), ensuring that all software components remain secure and up to date. This approach not only enhances vehicle performance but also reduces the need for physical maintenance, offering a more efficient and cost-effective solution for both automotive manufacturers and end-users.
